This is one of my favorite photographers Sein--and Dylan and I ran into her downtown!
She generously shared a few pointers on the camera and let me practice. Sein words: Keep the aperture on 2.8 all the time! Great for portraits, but keeps the entire person in focus--she adjusts the shutter speed as necessary. This was novel to me, as I am always messing around with the aperture AND the shutter speed which I've found takes a lot of time and increases my chances at getting it wrong. I never considered memorizing where the shutter speed control was until I watched her adjust the shutter speed while looking at the image rather than looking at the dashboard. Other advice: when near a cool mural or wall, we tend to want to stand against it--have the model step forward a good deal to capture the depth of field.
…I didn't realize she was going to match this wall SO well haha, oops
